There’s just something about golden hour.
That soft, buttery light that wraps around you…
The warm glow that makes every color feel richer…
The way skin tones look smoother, softer, and more alive…
Golden hour doesn’t just illuminate your photos that brings them to life.
As a photographer, it’s truly one of my favorite times of day to shoot in. Whether it’s the colors you’re wearing, the highlights in your hair, or the way your kids’ faces light up when the sun hits just right, golden hour adds this natural magic that simply can’t be recreated in the middle of the day. It creates a warm, nostalgic, calm feel that becomes part of your photos forever!
If you’re new here or just finding me in my little corner of the internet, hey there! I’m Samantha. I’m a Midwest wife, mama, and photographer who loves capturing the beauty tucked inside everyday life. My photography is warm, organic, nostalgic, and full of story… and golden hour is where that magic truly shines.
Why Golden Hour Is Worth It for Family Photos
Golden hour is that dreamy window right after sunrise or just before sunset when the sun sits low, the shadows soften, and everything takes on this beautiful, hazy glow.
Here’s why this is truly the best time of day for photos:
The Warmth
Golden hour adds a soft glow that flatters every skin tone and brings out those rich, warm colors that feel timeless.
The Softness
Because the sun is low, there are no harsh shadows or squinty eyes. Just even, gentle light that is perfect for kids who are always on the move.
The Emotion
Sunset sessions naturally feel calmer and more connected. The light encourages snuggling, movement, and those real, in-between moments that matter most.
The Timeless Look
Golden hour photos have that nostalgic, glowy look that feels like a warm memory.
Scheduling Golden Hour Sessions Around Kids
I know golden hour doesn’t always line up with little ones’ schedules, especially in summer when the sun sets later. I’m a mama too, so trust me, I get it. But with a little planning, we can make it work beautifully (and meltdown-free):
• Prep earlier in the day: A slower afternoon, quiet time, or a solid nap can make a world of difference.
• Bring snacks + comfort items: A favorite snack, a bottle, blanket or their favorite stuffy will go along way!
• Ease into the session: Kids warm up fast once they’re outside exploring.
• Keep it fun + moving: My sessions are lifestyle-forward, so there’s no pressure to sit still and smile. Running, playing, snuggling is all so perfect.
And honestly? Some of my favorite photos ever have come from that cozy, end-of-day softness. The handholding, the way kids lean in, the tender moments that naturally unfold.
What If Golden Hour Doesn’t Work? (Clouds, Weather, or Timing)
Golden hour is magical but life happens! Cloudy days, earlier bedtimes, weather changes, schedules, sports… it’s all part of real family life.
But the good news? You can still get beautiful, warm, storytelling photos even without golden hour!
Here’s what we do if golden hour doesn’t cooperate:
• Cloudy days are a dream. Clouds act like a giant softbox, giving us soft, creamy light that flatters everyone.
• We adjust our start time. I always scout locations and tailor the timing to whatever the light is doing.
• Sunrise is an option too. It’s early, yes, but sunrise light is just as magical — and often quieter.
• Indoor sessions are beautiful. Window light is soft, intimate, and perfect for storytelling photos.
Golden hour is my favorite but it’s not the only way to create heartfelt, meaningful images.
Ready to Chase the Golden Hour With Me?
If you’re already picturing your babies running through warm sunset light or your family snuggled in the tall grass… this is exactly why I love what I do. Golden hour is where the heart of my work truly lives , soft, warm, nostalgic, and real.
And I’m so excited to share that my 2026 sessions and available dates are officially open.
These golden hour spots go fast! Especially for families who love that slow, cozy, end-of-day feel just as much as I do.
Whether you want photos on your land, a sun-soaked field, or your favorite quiet corner… I would be honored to photograph your family in the kind of light that feels like home.
Let’s create warm, storytelling photos you’ll look back on for years and the ones that feel like your life, beautifully frozen in time.
