Motherhood; The Real, The Raw and the In-Between

Motherhood is one of the most joyous roles we can have, but it's also exhausting, messy, and at times maybe a little overwhelming. The days are long but the years are short, and before we know it they're 18 years old (which is crazy!), off to college and our babies are no longer babies anymore.

Capturing Your Babies First Years: Stress-Free Newborn & Family Photography

From the day we bring our babies home to their first birthday, it's a wild ride. Between postpartum hormones, sleepless nights, adjusting to life with a brand new baby, and figuring out your family's new routine, it can feel overwhelming - even for seasoned parents. Whether it's your first baby or your third, these first-year milestones are full of joy, chaos, love and unforgettable "firsts". The first time they smile, crawl, walk, laugh - these are the moments I aim to capture.

As a Green Bay family photographer and mama of two, I know firsthand how quickly time flies. Forgetting little things or feeling exhausted is part of the journey and there's absolutely no need to apologize. It's genuinely important to me to make newborn photography and family sessions to feel completely stress-free. My goal is to create a relaxed, natural environment where you can focus on the love that already lives there.

With that being said, here are a few tips to keep in mind when prepping for your newborn photography or family session that I've learned over time:

Newborn Sessions

Newborn sessions are all about capturing those quiet, fleeting first moments so a little prep goes a long way!

  1. Feed and comfort the baby - Try to schedule your feeding right before the session so your baby is sleepy and comfortable. A comfortable, full tummy usually means more peaceful photos!
  2. Keep the essentials hand - Diapers, wipes, extra outfits and a pacifier can save the day when your baby gets fussy or messy.
  3. Dress simply - Minimal layers so babes doesn't get to hot and neutral colors work best, so baby's features and expressions shine. Avoid logos or busy patterns.
  4. Create a Calm Environment - I've learned that quiet voices and a calm environment = a more relaxed and sleepy babes!

Family Sessions

Family sessions are about connection, laughter, and capturing the personalities that make your family unique!

  1. Coordinate outfits - Choose a color palette and stick with it! Aiming for 3-4 colors for your color palette is going to be your best bet, for example: Tans, whites and blue jean OR Tans, blush pink, blue jean and white
  2. Comfort comes first - Make sure everyone wears clothes they can move, sit, or play in - especially for the kiddos who love to run!
  3. Bring extra snacks / water - Little ones get hungry and thirsty, keep this on hand in a bag just in case!
  4. Plan timing wisely - Scheduling sessions during the kids happiest hours before nap time, after nap time or around golden hour (the 1-2 hours before sunset) will be your best bet!
  5. Focus on fun & connection - Play play play! I encourage lots of playing, tickle sessions (that usually end up turning into the best candid images!) and hugging. The best photos come from genuine interactions!
  6. Props & comfort items - Blankets, a favorite toy, or a special family item can add personality and comfort to your session!

I approach each session with intention and calm, I don't force sides or scripted poses; I let the moments unfold organically. From your baby's first giggles and milestones to the little glances between siblings and parents (my favorite!), these candid moments tell your real family story.
